Crunching, AC/DC-style guitars with a bass-heavy edge drive the track forward, paired with deep, reverb-soaked vocals that sit low in the mix. There’s a strong nod to ’90s grunge in the heavy use of atmosphere, along with some solid harmonies that add depth. Overall, it’s a highly dynamic song.
“The River is a reflection on the pain and helplessness of loving someone who is very close to you but emotionally out of reach.” - Feral Family frontman Jamie Lowe. They’ve been posting songs to Spotify since 2018 and you can hear that they have been improving and advancing their craft. The River is a cut above what they’ve done before. Their sound carries shades of Sisters of Mercy and The Cult—not in a direct, copycat way, but in the mood and those dark, echoing low vocals. There’s a brooding, shadowy feel throughout. Maybe it’s something in the Yorkshire air, somewhere between Bradford, Leeds, and Bridlington. They are touring at the moment and getting great publicity and backing from some big names including BBC Introducing via Steve Lamacq (BBC 6 Music), and also from John Kennedy (Radio X). They’ve got dates lined up for Hull and London in May and are hoping to get on the bill at Download Festival, by way of a Kerrang! Radio competition, this summer too.
