New single

The new single from Man/Woman/Chainsaw is something special. The refrain ‘Baby get me back over you’ in the lengthy outro is an uplifting though slightly melancholy finish. It sends shivers down the spine and has slight echoes of ‘I’ve got Soul but I’m not a Soldier’ from the Killers ‘All These Things That I've Done’.

The song is the follow up to the beautiful ‘Only Girl’ released at the end of last year. It was their first music released on Fiction Records. Both songs will feature on an album, Cannonball, due out later in the year. We reviewed their gig when they performed at the White Hotel in Manchester earlier this year and loved every minute of it. This new song is a major leap forward though. The synth arpeggio at the start has the ethereal qualities of Frankie knuckles ‘Your Love’ / Candi Staton ‘You Got the Love’. Then joined by a violin that is synonymous with the Man/Woman/Chainsaw sound that this time gives it a slight aching sadness. The double vocals harmony of Emmie-Mae Avery and Billy Ward are inviting though, and the song begins to warm. It builds in a way that breaks into a more uplifting feel. It deserves its 6 minute length, you don't cut this one short or you’d be missing the point. We can see this becoming a festival anthem with crowd sing-alongs. If it can get the 6 minute airplay on the radio then this will catapult the band into stardom. If not, it will be appreciated when the album comes out later in the year. M/W/C worked with producers Seth Evans and Margo Broom, famed for productions with Black Midi and Fat White Family respectively. The song was recorded at RAK studios in London, where classics such as ‘"Bigmouth Strikes Again" - The Smiths, "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" - The Jam, "Pretty in Pink" - The Psychedelic Furs and "Vienna" - Ultravox amongst others were recorded. So they’re in very good company in that regard.
