The album was first released in the UK on May 24, 1993, and later in the US on June 8, 1993. Known for its intricate layering, progressive structure, and intelligent techno soundscapes, the album helped cement Orbital as pioneers in the electronic music scene. Upon its release, *The Brown Album* reached number 28 on the UK Albums Chart. In the United States, it did not break into the Billboard 200, but gained significant underground acclaim and built a strong cult following. The album was released under Internal Records in the UK and London/FFRR Records internationally. It was recorded at Orbital's own studio, located in a converted garage at the Hartnoll brothers' family home in Sevenoaks, Kent, England.
