
Courtney Barnett (born 15 July 1987) is an Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist from Melbourne. She emerged from Melbourne’s indie scene with a deadpan vocal style and sharp, observational lyrics. Her 2013 release, The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, earned international attention with tracks like Avant Gardener and Pedestrian at Best. Her debut full-length album, Sometimes I Sit and Sometimes I Just Sit (2015), received widespread critical acclaim for its wry storytelling and melodic guitar work. In 2017 she collaborated with Kurt Vile on the collaborative album Lotta Sea Lice, a loose, intimate indie rock record. Barnett released the solo album Things Take Time, Take Time in 2021, noted for its reflective songs about memory, time, and everyday life. Known for economical, precise lyric writing, she has played a key role in bringing Australian indie rock to a global audience.
