Modest Mouse is an American indie rock band formed in Issaquah, Washington, in 1992 by Isaac Brock, Eric Judy, and Jeremiah Green. Known for their idiosyncratic, lo-fi sound and literate, often surreal lyrics, they built a devoted following in the Pacific Northwest with early releases like This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and The Lonesome Crowded West. Their breakthrough came with Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004), which included the hit “Float On” and brought them to a wider audience. The group has endured lineup changes, with Brock as the constant creative force; their music has spanned garage rock, folk, and experimental textures, and they collaborated with Johnny Marr on the 2007 album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. Founding drummer Jeremiah Green died in 2021, marking a turning point for the band. Modest Mouse has continued releasing music, including Strangers to Ourselves (2015) and The Golden Casket (2021), leaving a lasting influence on indie rock.
