The Specials

The Specials

The Specials are an English ska band from Coventry, formed in 1977 by keyboardist Jerry Dammers. Originally billed as the Coventry Automatics, they quickly renamed themselves The Specials and became a leading force in the late 1970s two-tone ska revival, blending Jamaican ska with punk energy and social commentary. They released music on the 2 Tone label, which Dammers helped establish to promote racial unity and cross-cultural collaboration. The classic lineup included Terry Hall (vocals), Neville Staple (vocals/percussion), Lynval Golding (guitar/vocals), Horace Panter (bass), Roddy Radiation (guitar), and Dammers (keyboard). Their 1979 debut album, The Specials, yielded hits such as A Message to You Rudy, Nite Klub, and Do Nothing. The follow-up More Specials (1980) explored pop-tinged arrangements. They reached the peak of commercial impact with Too Much Too Young (1980) and Ghost Town (1981), the latter a stark reflection on unemployment and urban decay in Britain. Internal tensions led to the band dissolving in 1981, though members pursued other projects and later reconfigurations of The Specials emerged. Since then the group has reformed for tours and new recordings, preserving a lasting legacy as one of the era’s most influential ska acts.
