The Smile

The Smile is an English rock band formed in 2021, featuring Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, alongside Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner. The trio emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, exploring a fresh musical direction that combines elements of art rock, post-punk, and electronic music while maintaining the inventive spirit of their primary projects. Thom Yorke, the enigmatic vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, and Jonny Greenwood, the critically acclaimed guitarist and composer, constitute the core of Radiohead's innovative sound. Their decision to collaborate with Tom Skinner, known for his dynamic drumming and jazz influences, brought a unique rhythmic dimension to The Smile’s music. The band’s name, inspired by a Ted Hughes poem, reflects a blend of melancholy and optimism—a signature element in their music. They made their public debut with an unexpected livestream performance during the 2021 Glastonbury Festival's "Live at Worthy Farm" event, capturing immediate attention for their intricate compositions and compelling live presence. In May 2022, The Smile released their debut album, “A Light for Attracting Attention,” produced by Nigel Godrich, a long-time collaborator with Radiohead. The album garnered critical acclaim for its nuanced songwriting, experimental soundscapes, and the seamless synergy between the band members. Tracks like "You Will Never Work in Television Again" and "The Smoke" were highlighted for their intense energy and lyrical depth. Despite their recent formation, The Smile has quickly established itself as a powerful force in contemporary music, continuing to push sonic boundaries and engage audiences worldwide. The trio’s commitment to creative exploration ensures that The Smile is not merely a side project but a potent, evolving artistic endeavor in its own right.
