She was born on April 28, 1995, in Astoria, Queens, New York, and later moved to Baldwin, New York, on Long Island. From an early age, she showed a strong interest in music and the arts, teaching herself to play guitar and writing original songs during her childhood. Martinez first gained national attention in 2012 as a contestant on the third season of the television singing competition *The Voice*. Although she was eliminated during the live shows, her haunting vocals and artistic flair won her a devoted fanbase. After the show, she embarked on a solo music career and released her debut single "Dollhouse" in 2014, which gained popularity for its dark themes and theatrical music video. In 2015, Martinez released her debut album, *Cry Baby*, a concept album that mixes childlike imagery with mature themes of self-identity, trauma, and societal expectations. The album was both a critical and commercial success, spawning several singles including "Pity Party," "Soap," and "Mad Hatter." She followed up with her second studio album, *K-12*, in 2019. The album was accompanied by a full-length feature film, which Martinez wrote, directed, and starred in. This project further showcased her talent for blending music with elaborate visual storytelling. Melanie Martinez's third album, *Portals*, was released in 2023 and marked a shift in her persona and sound, introducing new conceptual themes and artistic evolution. Known for her theatrical aesthetics, boundary-pushing visuals, and conceptual albums, Martinez has built a distinctive place in the pop landscape. Beyond music, she is also involved in fashion and design, often incorporating elaborate costumes and surreal imagery into her work.
