Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles was a Canadian electronic music duo formed in 2006 in Toronto, Ontario. The original lineup consisted of producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. The group's music blended elements of electro, synth-pop, punk, and experimental sounds, quickly gaining a reputation for their intense live performances and distinctive lo-fi aesthetic. Their debut album, *Crystal Castles*, was released in 2008 and received critical acclaim for its chaotic, 8-bit-influenced sound. Tracks like "Crimewave" and "Alice Practice" became underground hits, establishing the duo as a unique force in the electronic music scene. The album's raw energy and innovative approach to sound sampling set them apart from their contemporaries. In 2010, they released their second self-titled album, often referred to as *Crystal Castles II*. It showcased a darker, more polished sound and included standouts like "Not in Love," which featured vocals from The Cure's Robert Smith. This collaboration brought the band further mainstream exposure and cemented their status in the global electronic scene. Their third album, *Crystal Castles III*, arrived in 2012, continuing their evolution into a more gothic, emotionally charged style. The record tackled themes of oppression and dystopia, reflecting a more mature and somber tone in both lyrics and production. In 2014, Alice Glass announced her departure from Crystal Castles, citing both professional and personal reasons. She later released statements alleging abusive behavior by Ethan Kath, which led to public controversy and legal action. Despite the turmoil, Kath continued the project with a new vocalist, Edith Frances, and released the fourth studio album, *Amnesty (I)*, in 2016. While Crystal Castles continued under the new lineup, the group's legacy remains closely tied to its original formation. Their influence is visible in the rise of glitchy electronic pop and underground synth music throughout the 2010s. Known for their sonic aggression, cryptic visuals, and unpredictable performances, Crystal Castles left an indelible mark on the electronic music landscape.
