Enigma

Enigma is a German musical project founded in 1990 by Romanian-German musician and producer Michael Cretu. Known for its unique fusion of electronic, ambient, and world music, Enigma gained international fame with the release of its debut album *MCMXC a.D.* in 1990. The album featured the hit single "Sadeness (Part I)," which combined Gregorian chants with modern beats, creating a distinctive sound that defined the project's early style. Cretu, who had previously worked in the pop and synth-pop scenes, envisioned Enigma as a vehicle for exploring atmospheric and spiritual soundscapes. He produced the music in his home studio in Ibiza, often collaborating with vocalists such as Sandra Cretu, his former wife and a successful pop singer in her own right. Over the years, Enigma released several albums, including *The Cross of Changes* (1993), *Le Roi est mort, vive le Roi!* (1996), and *The Screen Behind the Mirror* (2000). Each release saw the project's sound evolve, incorporating diverse elements from new age, classical, and ethnic music traditions. Enigma has sold over 70 million records worldwide and remains influential in the realm of electronic and ambient music. Despite the project's low public profile and minimal live performances, its mysterious image and innovative sound continue to captivate listeners around the globe.
