James
James are an English rock band formed in the Manchester suburb of Moss Side in 1981. Founded around bassist Jim Glennie and initially fronted by singer Paul Gilbertson (later replaced by Tim Booth), they evolved through a shifting lineup to crystallize in the mid-’80s with guitarist Larry Gott and violinist Saul Davies adding depth to their sound. Initially part of the late-’80s “Madchester” scene alongside contemporaries like the Stone Roses, James combined jangly guitars, driving rhythms, and Booth’s impassioned vocals. Their early albums—*Stutter* (1986) and *Strip-mine* (1988)—built a cult following, but mainstream success arrived with the anthemic “Sit Down” (re-released in 1991), which reached the UK Top 10, and the album *Gold Mother* (1990). They followed up with *Seven* (1992) and the gold-selling *Laid* (1993), whose title track also became a college-radio staple in the United States. After releasing *Wah Wah* (1994) and *Whiplash* (1997), creative differences led to their dissolution in 2001. In 2007, original and long-standing members reunited—Booth, Glennie, Gott, Davies, drummer David Baynton-Power, and keyboardist Mark Hunter—and resumed touring and recording. Albums like *Hey Ma* (2008), *La Petite Mort* (2014), and *Live in Extraordinary Times* (2018) showcase their ability to evolve while retaining their signature blend of introspective lyrics and uplifting melodies. Over more than four decades, James have remained a vibrant live act, celebrated for their communal sing-alongs and eclectic songwriting. Their journey from Manchester’s underground to international stages illustrates both their adaptability and the enduring power of heartfelt, anthemic rock.
