Sports Team
Sports Team is a British indie rock band formed in 2016, known for their energetic live shows and sharp, observational lyrics. The group originated while the members were studying at the University of Cambridge, eventually settling as a six-piece line-up featuring Alex Rice on vocals, Rob Knaggs and Henry Young on guitars, Oli Dewdney on bass, Ben Mack on drums, and Al Greenwood on keyboards and percussion. Drawing inspiration from classic British guitar bands and contemporary post-punk, Sports Team quickly gained attention with their witty, often satirical take on modern British life. Their lyrics commonly touch on themes of small-town existence, middle-class ambition, and everyday absurdities, delivered with a mix of irony and genuine affection. The band’s debut EP, *Winter Nets*, was released in 2018 and helped build momentum thanks to its raw sound and engaging storytelling. In June 2020, they released their debut album, *Deep Down Happy*, which received critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. The album peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart, narrowly missing the top spot. Sports Team continued to build on their early success with extensive touring across the UK and beyond, establishing a passionate fan base. In 2022, they released their second album, *Gulp*, further refining their sound while maintaining their irreverent and lively spirit. With a reputation for high-octane performances and a distinctive voice in modern British guitar music, Sports Team has solidified its place as one of the leading acts in the UK indie scene.
