Genesis

Genesis

Genesis is an English rock band formed in 1967 in Godalming, Surrey. The original lineup featured Peter Gabriel as lead vocalist, Tony Banks on keyboards, Mike Rutherford on bass and guitar, Anthony Phillips on guitar, and Chris Stewart on drums. Known for their complex song structures and theatrical live performances, Genesis initially gained recognition as a progressive rock band. Their early albums, including *Trespass* and *Nursery Cryme*, established a distinctive sound marked by elaborate storytelling and instrumental passages. With the release of *Foxtrot* and *Selling England by the Pound*, Genesis became a prominent force in progressive rock. Gabriel's eccentric stage presence became a hallmark of their live shows. Peter Gabriel left the band in 1975 to pursue a solo career, and drummer Phil Collins stepped in as lead vocalist. This marked a shift in the band's musical direction toward a more accessible, pop-oriented sound, leading to massive commercial success. Albums like *Duke*, *Abacab*, and *Invisible Touch* produced chart-topping singles and brought the band a wider audience. Despite lineup changes over the years, including the departures of Collins in the 1990s and subsequent returns for reunion tours, Genesis remains one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Their influence spans multiple decades and genres, cementing their place in the history of rock music.
