Bella Kay

Fast Rising New Artist

Story by Liam Hughes

Bella Kay may have just completed a sold-out headline show at London's O2 Academy Islington, but the fast-rising Texan remains remarkably grounded. Reflecting on the performance the following day, she simply described it as "great" —an understated response from an artist whose career is accelerating at breakneck speed.

That momentum shows little sign of slowing. Fresh from a sold-out UK and European tour, Kay heads across North America this summer for a run of headline and festival appearances before returning to Britain this autumn to support Noah Kahan on his UK and Ireland arena tour. "I'm such a big fan," she said of the singer-songwriter *(quoted in Music Week magazine).* Kay's ascent has been fuelled by emotionally candid songwriting and infectious acoustic-driven pop. Her breakout single ILoveItILoveItILoveIt has amassed more than 286 million Spotify streams since its release in January, reaching the UK Top 2 and the US Hot 100. Alongside the viral success of earlier single The Sick, the track has firmly established the singer-songwriter as one of pop's most exciting emerging voices. Despite the rapid rise, Kay insists she's taking everything in her stride. Signing to Atlantic Records came quickly, but she says the experience has been overwhelmingly positive. "I've just been really fortunate to have got signed in a way that allowed me to grow and explore," she explained *(quoted in Music Week magazine).* She also praised her label's collaborative approach, adding that the team "listen to me and want my vision to come to life" *(quoted in Music Week magazine).* Rather than dwelling on chart positions, Kay's attention is firmly fixed on her debut album. "I don't pay super close attention to the charts," she admitted. "I'm finishing the album so it's hard for me to focus on something in the past" *(quoted in Music Week magazine).* According to the singer, the forthcoming record will stay true to her songwriting while pushing into new creative territory. "People are going to be like, 'Whoa, I didn't know she could or would do that.' It's more exploratory," she said *(quoted in Music Week magazine).* Much of the album has been written in Los Angeles alongside songwriter-producer Alexis Kesselman, whom Kay describes as "the other half of my brain" *(quoted in Music Week magazine).* While social media has played a major role in her rise, Kay remains clear about her long-term ambition. "To do this job in a way that makes me happy for as long as possible," she concluded. "I've always loved writing and music, so it all felt like kismet" *(quoted in Music Week magazine).*
