Little Dark Age

Review

By Liam Hughes | 08/04/2026

MGMT’s *Little Dark Age* marks a triumphant return to form for the duo, blending their psychedelic pop roots with a darker, synth-driven edge. Released in 2018, the album strikes a compelling balance between catchy melodies and introspective lyricism, showcasing a matured sound without abandoning the whimsical experimentation that made their earlier work stand out. Tracks like the title song “Little Dark Age” and “When You Die” feature infectious hooks layered over glossy New Wave-inspired production, while deeper cuts such as “Me and Michael” offer nostalgic nods to 80s pop sensibilities with a modern twist. The album moves seamlessly between playful and haunting tones, reflecting a sense of unease that feels timely yet timeless. Overall, *Little Dark Age* is a cohesive, stylish, and richly textured record that reaffirms MGMT’s ability to evolve while staying true to their unique artistic vision.
