WASTEISOLATION

Review

By Liam Hughes | 08/04/2026

WASTEISOLATION by Black Dresses is a visceral and uncompromising debut that blends industrial noise, glitchy electronics, and raw emotion into a chaotic yet cathartic experience. The Canadian duo – Devi McCallion and Ada Rook – deliver a fiercely personal project that explores themes of trauma, identity, and self-destruction with unfiltered honesty. Tracks like BEAUTIFUL FRIEND and THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS juxtapose abrasive textures with vulnerable lyrics, making the album feel both confrontational and deeply intimate. There's a manic energy running throughout, emphasized by the lo-fi production and screamed vocals, that gives WASTEISOLATION a sense of urgent authenticity. It's not an easy listen, but it's an unforgettable one—full of pain, passion, and defiance.

Info

**WASTEISOLATION** is the debut studio album by Canadian noise-pop duo Black Dresses, released independently on April 13, 2018, in both the UK and US. The project quickly gained a cult following online for its abrasive sound and deeply personal, emotionally raw lyrics. Due to its independent release and digital-only distribution through platforms like Bandcamp and streaming services, WASTEISOLATION did not chart officially in either the UK or US. The album was self-released by the duo without a record label and recorded remotely, with both members — Ada Rook and Devi McCallion — collaborating online from different locations in Canada. It was also self-produced by the artists, reflecting the DIY ethic and experimental nature that would become a hallmark of their sound.
