Black Dresses is a Canadian noise pop and industrial duo formed in 2017, consisting of members Ada Rook and Devi McCallion. Known for their unique fusion of abrasive electronic production, distorted vocals, and emotionally raw lyrics, the group quickly gained a cult following online. Their music often explores themes of trauma, identity, queerness, and resilience, resonating strongly with listeners from marginalized communities. Black Dresses released their debut album WASTEISOLATION in 2018, followed by a rapid succession of records including LOVE AND AFFECTION FOR STUPID LITTLE BITCHES and THANK YOU. Each release pushed their experimental boundaries further, earning them critical recognition for their innovative sound and unfiltered lyricism. Despite announcing a breakup in 2020 due to harassment and online pressure, the duo continued to release music, stating that Black Dresses was over in a public sense but not as a collaborative force. This led to albums like FOREVER IN YOUR HEART and FORGET YOUR OWN FACE, which continued to explore themes of alienation and survival with vivid sonic intensity. Both members also pursue solo projects, contributing to the broader landscape of underground and experimental music. Black Dresses remains a significant presence in the digital music era, celebrated for their raw authenticity and boundary-defying artistry.
